About TestCall.com
TestCall.com is a service of Infotel Systems, an FCC-registered telephone company in Richmond, Virginia. Infotel registered the TestCalls name in 1999 and built the system to support its hosted VoIP phone systems. The site reports more than 500 million free test calls since 1999.
The free test line: 804-222-1111
| Press | Test | Use it to check |
|---|---|---|
| — | Caller ID readback | The system reads back the 10-digit caller ID it received — confirms what your outbound caller ID really shows |
| 1 | 1000 Hz tone (up to 60 seconds) | Tracing analog lines; tone level and dropouts |
| 2 | DTMF (keypad) test | Enter digits then #; it speaks back what it heard. Diagnoses auto-attendant and menu selections that fail on VoIP |
| 3 | Voice echo | Repeats what you say in real time — finds one-way audio. The system adds at least about 800 ms on its own, so judge audio, not delay |
| 4 | Record and playback | Hear how your voice arrives after crossing the network |
| 5 | Fax | Sends a one-page fine-resolution test fax to the number you enter |
| 6 | Caller ID chain recording | Record a short message from each device (desk phone, headset, conference phone); it's appended to a file named for your caller ID |
| 7 | Play chain recording | Play all the devices back to back and compare them |
Pressing # returns to the menu (except during the tone). The line is for people only — automated calls are treated as abuse. If you make no choice, it hangs up.
How I use it on a service call
- One-way audio? Press 3. If you can't hear yourself echoed back, audio isn't making the round trip — check SIP ALG and the firewall with the NAT & STUN test.
- Menus don't respond to key presses? Press 2 and type 1234567890#. Missing or doubled digits mean a DTMF setting (RFC 2833 / SIP INFO / in-band) mismatch.
- "You sound bad" complaints? Press 6 from each device, then 7 to compare them back to back. The bad headset stands out.
- Wrong caller ID name or number? Listen to the readback, then see FixCallerID.com.
Professional testing services
| Service | What it does | Finds |
|---|---|---|
| Call connection & line quality monitoring | Calls a 1004 Hz tone on your PBX about once a minute, samples it about 50 times, scores the percentage of clean tone, and emails an alert after 3 consecutive failures. Can retry over a second carrier. | Down PBX or trunks, slow answer, jitter or loss, ring-no-answer, busy |
| Hammer (load) testing | Places stepped batches of simultaneous calls — up to 500 — to your number while a tech listens and timestamps any audio defects. | Trunk limits, carrier overflow, bad overflow routes, PBX CPU overload, audio problems |
| Audio latency testing | Targets echo and talk-over, common with offshore call centers. | Poor carrier routes, slow PBXs, weak headsets, missing QoS, oversized jitter buffers |
| Caller ID services | CNAM database testing and caller ID name management, with support at FixCallerID.com. | Wrong or missing names, spam/fraud labeling |
Reports
- Hammer report — an Excel file covering every call: caller ID, SIP disconnect code and meaning, who hung up, MOS, RTP packets received and lost, and percent non-silent audio. WAV recordings and a PCAP (SIP trace) are optional.
- Monitor report — a live web report of each once-a-minute test with tone detected or not, and a recording of failed calls (beta).

Frequently asked questions
Is there a free phone number to test call quality?
Yes. 804-222-1111 is TestCall.com's free test line from Infotel Systems. It reads back your caller ID and offers a 1000 Hz tone, a keypad (DTMF) test, real-time voice echo, record-and-playback, a test fax and a recording chain for comparing devices. It's for people only; automated calls aren't permitted.
How do I test for one-way audio with a phone call?
Call 804-222-1111 and press 3 for the voice echo test. Speak after the beep. If you can't hear your voice repeated, audio isn't completing the round trip — usually a NAT, firewall or SIP ALG problem. The test line adds about 800 ms of delay on its own, so judge whether audio arrives, not the delay.
What is a DTMF test?
DTMF tones are the sounds your keypad makes. A DTMF test checks that the far end receives each digit correctly. On the 804-222-1111 line, press 2, enter digits and press #, and the system reads back what it received. Missing or doubled digits point to a DTMF transport setting mismatch on a VoIP system.
What is a hammer test for a phone system?
A hammer test places many simultaneous calls to a phone system to find where it fails. TestCall.com ramps calls in stages up to 500 at once, with a technician listening, and delivers a per-call report with MOS, packet loss and disconnect codes.
How does phone system monitoring work?
TestCall.com calls a 1004 Hz tone loaded on your phone system about once a minute, samples the tone about 50 times, and scores the call. Three failures in a row trigger an email alert with the test data and a recording of the failed call.
How much does TestCall.com cost?
The test line 804-222-1111 is free. As listed in November 2026, monitoring and hammer testing each have an $800 one-time setup, with test calls billed at $0.005 per minute; monitoring has a $59 monthly minimum. See testcall.com/faq for current pricing.
