Android Call Quality Test

Run it right from your Android phone: test the carrier's data and your Wi-Fi, grade your signal, and find the settings that fix dropped or garbled calls.

Short answer: Open this page on your Android phone and run the test with Wi-Fi off (carrier data) and again with Wi-Fi on. Then check signal strength under Settings → About phone → SIM status: RSRP above −90 dBm is good, −100 dBm or below is poor. Weak signal inside buildings is fixed with Wi-Fi Calling.

1. Test the data your calls use

The test above checks latency, jitter, loss and speed. Run it twice: once with Wi-Fi off, which tests your carrier's mobile data (used by calling apps and Teams/Zoom on the go), and once on Wi-Fi, which is what Wi-Fi Calling uses indoors.

2. Grade your signal

See signal strength in dBmSettings → About phone → SIM status (or Status information) → Signal strength. Many models also open a testing menu when you dial *#*#4636#*#*.
Show your IMEIDial *#06#

Menu names change between Android versions, manufacturers and carriers. On some carriers (for example AT&T), VoLTE must be on before Wi-Fi Calling appears.

3. Hear a real call

Dial the free test line 804-222-1111 from your Android phone. Press 3 for a live echo test or 4 to record and play back your voice. Try it on cellular and again on Wi-Fi Calling.

Common Android call fixes

  1. Restart the phone — it re-registers with the network.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi Calling on if indoor signal is weak.
  3. Install system and carrier updates.
  4. Remove the case and test again if signal is marginal; some metal or magnetic cases reduce it.
  5. Test with a different headset or Bluetooth device off — many "bad call" complaints are a Bluetooth car kit or earbud.
  6. Still bad in one location? It's coverage, not the phone. See cellular fixes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test call quality on my Android phone?

Open this page on the phone and run the test with Wi-Fi off and then on. Check signal strength in Settings, About phone, SIM status, and enter it in the signal grader. Then call the free test line 804-222-1111 and use the echo or record-and-playback option to hear how calls actually sound.

How do I turn on Wi-Fi Calling on Android?

On Google Pixel: Settings, Network & internet, Calls & SMS, choose your carrier, then turn on Wi-Fi Calling. On Samsung Galaxy: Settings, Connections, Wi-Fi Calling. Your carrier must support it, and you may be asked for an emergency address.

How do I check my real signal strength on Android?

Go to Settings, About phone, SIM status (or Status information) and look at Signal strength in dBm. On LTE and 5G, −80 dBm or higher is excellent, −90 to −100 is fair, and −100 or lower is poor. Many models also show more detail through the *#*#4636#*#* testing menu.

Why do my calls sound bad on my Android phone?

The most common causes are weak or noisy signal indoors, a poor Wi-Fi connection during Wi-Fi Calling, a Bluetooth headset or car kit, or a blocked microphone. Test on speaker and on the handset with Bluetooth off to rule out the accessory.

Does Android have a built-in call quality test?

Not a universal one. Android shows signal strength in Settings and many models have a hidden testing menu, but there is no standard built-in call test. A web test like this one plus a test call to 804-222-1111 covers it.

Why do Android calls drop in my office?

Building materials block cellular signal, especially metal, concrete and energy-efficient glass. Turn on Wi-Fi Calling, use your business phone system's softphone app over Wi-Fi, or have a certified signal booster installed and registered with your carrier.
